How to Increase Upper Body Strength

This shop has been compensated by CollectiveBias, Inc. on behalf of its advertiser, ZonePerfect. #SnackandRally #CollectiveBias

Anyone who knows me well knows I work really hard at being fit and healthy. Recently I set a new goal -- I want to go to the Crossfit Games. I'm secretly crossing my fingers that a 35-40 age group will be added. Tailored training started last week and my first local competition is in July. I'll try and keep everyone up to speed, but don't forget to follow my adventures on Instagram .

While there are a number of movements on my 'needs improvement' list today, I'm talking about upper body strength. Although I might be decent at pull-ups, I struggle at high rep push-ups, chest to bar pull-ups, and toes to bar.

So when I'm not in the gym I'm focusing on increasing my strength using body weight movements at home. Yes, I'm putting in extra work at home. These movements are simple and anyone can do them. All you need is yourself, a pull-up bar and maybe a resistance band if you can't do a strict pull-up yet.

How to Increase Upper Body Strength

Complete 100 total reps 3 times a week of the following movements:

+ pull-ups [switch up hand positions, use a resistant band if needed]
+ push-ups [drop to knees if needed]
+ toe to bar or knees to elbows [v-ups or hollow rocks]
+ burpees [just because I love them and they work the whole body]

Give yourself at least a month. Trust me you'll see your strength increased and will be knocking out 100 pull-ups or 200 push-ups in no time!

Another key to achieving fit goals is watching what you eat. I'm sorry, but you can't out exercise a bad diet. This is why I always keep healthy snacks in my gym bag, purse, etc. You never want to be caught hungry or off guard. I typically follow a zone/paleo lifestyle.

Life doesn't slow down just because you are tired or hungry. Recently, while at Walmart, I picked up a few boxes of the ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bar. It is not just a pick me up. ZonePerfect® is a straight up, all-in, get after it, lift me up. I might have found the perfect snack for my high energy lifestyle. Try Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Peanut Butter or Fudge Graham!

A snack as awesome as you are!

How to Wake Up and Workout Early

Happy Memorial Day!

I'm off to the local crossfit gym for Murph [1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push ups, 300 air squats, 1 mile run]. I'll be on the beach crying later if you need me.

I love getting up and working out out early -- said no now ever. Guess what?! It really is the best. I'm a morning person always have been. I'm the crazy lady up and to the gym at 6 a.m. or hitting the trail by 8 a.m. Want to be friends?

While these days I workout when I can, I still prefer to workout first thing in the morning. A typical week has me at the gym twice a week before 6 a.m. for spin and 4-5 days at crossfit.

How to Wake up and Workout Early

Set Out your Clothes the Night Before
By setting out your clothes the night before you're setting yourself up for success.  Personally I leave my clothes in the bathroom so I don't have to worry about waking up the hubby. I've had one friend tell me she sleeps in her gym clothes! HA! Whatever it takes to get up and out the door.

Pack your Gym Bag the Night Before
There's nothing worst than running around in the morning looking for 'gym things.' Once dressed, etc you just have to grab and go.

Set Your Coffee
No one has time to make coffee before the sunrise. Trust me, prep EVERY thing the night before.

Stash Mints in Your Nightstand
The sugar in the mint will excite and your brain, and the mint itself will liven up your tongue’s taste buds and nerve endings. Basically, you’ll get rid of morning breath and wake up your mind and body for a sweat session.

I like to keep a packet of LISTERINE® POCKETPAKS® Cool Mint in my nightstand. Not only do they Dissolve instantly, but they Kill 99% of odor-causing bacteria in 30 seconds and bad breath germs [in lab studies]!

Go to Bed Early
Sleep does a body good. If you want to wake up early then you have to go to bed early. Start by going to bed 15 minutes early every night until you hit your ideal bedtime. I like to be in bed by 9 p.m. with the absolute latest being 10 p.m.

How to Wake Up and Workout Early

My morning time must haves [besides coffee]. As apart of my morning routine I love using LISTERINE® TOTAL CARE Fresh Mint mouthwash. Not only does it kill germ and freshen your breath, but it helps wake you up. Well, it helps me. Hey anything that gets me going in the morning.

How to Wake Up and Workout Early

Did you know it's the only nationally branded antimicrobial mouthwash to receive the ADA Seal of Acceptance for fighting plaque and gingivitis?!

The next time you're at Walmart check out the mouthwash aisle and don't forget to use this COUPON. You're welcome ;)

Happy sweating!

Are you a morning person? What are a few of your tips and tricks to waking up and working out early?

Honey Pecan Zucchini Muffins

What does one do when they purchase a bag of zucchinis from Costco? Well, make zucchini bread and muffins silly! My freezer is stocked for the apocalypse and our bellies are full.

While I made my go-to blueberry zucchini bread I also experimented a little. Like honey pecan zucchini muffins! WHAT?! Yup you read that right -- honey pecan! Two flavors that blend together so well. I should mention the honey flavor is supper subtle because I didn't actually use honey, but used Honey MELT® Organic [c/o], a healthy butter alternative.

Honey MELT Organic combines our signature blend of MELT with organic wildflower honey and cinnamon for a naturally sweet taste. Honey MELT is perfect for everyone who loves the sweet combination of honey and butter but wants a delicious alternative. Honey MELT has half the saturated fat of butter and just 1 gram of sugar per serving.

I've been using Melt for a few months now [see HERE and HERE] and honestly when I want a little something to spread on toast, muffins, etc. it's perfect.

MELT Organic spreads are North America’s first line of luscious butter improvements that are truly good for you. MELT Organic is made with a Perfect Blend of fruit and plant-based oils.

Melt is ideal for baking as it's smooth, creamy, and full of flavor. Plus it comes in chocolate! My plan is to make some brownies using Chocolate MELT® Organic in the near future.

Until then, I'll be sipping on my morning coffee while enjoying a zucchini muffin!

Honey Pecan Zucchini Muffins
Makes 12-18

3 cups zucchini, grated
2/3 cup melted Honey MELT® Organic
1 1/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
2 tsp baking soda
Pinch salt
3 cups flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup pecans
1 cup raisins

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl combine the sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in the grated zucchini and melted Honey MELT® Organic.

In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt. Stir dry ingredients into the zucchini mixture. Stir in pecans and raisins.

Spray muffin pan or use liners. Use a 1/4 cup to distribute the muffin dough equally among the cups, filling the cups up completely.

Bake on the middle rack until muffins are golden brown, about 20 to 25 minutes. Cool on wire rack for 5 minutes. Remove muffins from and enjoy.

Simple and Affordable Ways to Maintain Your Car

Simple and Affordable Ways to Maintain Your Car

My sister once said my husband and I were a frugal match made in heaven. To that -- I say thank you! We like nice things, but we're not extravagant people. We don't have the latest and great phone, worry about name brands [it's more about performance when it comes to gear] and we don't don't drive brand new cars. In fact a few years ago when we sold my 1998 Rav4 we purchased a low mileage 3 year old car. Why? Because it's the smart thing to do.

Fun fact: my husband still drives a 1996 Nissan Maxima! In his defense he drives 5 miles round trip to work. Don't worry in the summer he rides his bike ;)

We also have a 1993 F-150. Yes, we have two drivers and three cars. Technically, the truck is my brother's and is on loan until he has the space for it. #beachlivingproblems.

Needless to say we're saving a fair amount in the car department, but to make sure you hit 200k + miles you have to maintain your car.  Let's call a spade a spade -- No one ever said, "I love car payments." The moral is be good to your car and hopefully it will be good to you.

Simple and Affordable Ways to Maintain Your Car

Tips for Maintaining Your Car

Regular Oil Changes
Don’t overthink it, just do what you need to do when it comes to engine oil. Your owner’s manual spells out accepted viscosities and possibly even the recommended brand.

Pro Tip: High Mileage? Use Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage it helps to reduce leaks and oil consumption in worn or higher mileage engines. It's a motor oil that is specifically designed for new or late model vehicles with over 75,000 miles, to help keep the engines running clean and going strong for a long time.

Rotate Your Tires
With frequent rotation your tires will last longer. Resulting in less money over time. Pro tip: When you purchase new tires make sure they come with free tire rotations.

Follow the Maintenance Manual
Following the engine and transmission maintenance recommendations in your owner’s manual will extend your car’s life and save you money in the long run. Don’t delude yourself into thinking that you can skip the cost of upkeep and still have a vehicle that runs efficiently for very long. When you try to buy time, there’s a good chance you’ll also buy more parts and labor in the future.

Check your Fluids
To follow through on the previous tip to maintain your car, you can’t just turn the key and drive every time, and you can’t just roll into the shop every day for maintenance. You need to keep tabs on fluid levels and tire pressure. Checking lights and signals at the same time doesn’t hurt, either. Make it a regular habit and you’re less likely to get caught by surprise.

Shop Online and Save

Now for more savings... Calling all my online loving shoppers. While there are some stores that I could wander aimlessly in there are others I simply want to run in, grab a killer deal and run out. Walmart is one of those. Ordering online is easy and convenient, and it saves time in our busy days. You can either pick up the items, like oil, in store or have it shipped directly to your house!

Recently we needed some oil for the truck so my husband placed an order through and I picked it up. Seriously it was that easy.

Pennzoil is designed for complete protection and will allow you to drive an extra of 550 miles per year vs. a dirty engine.

Deal Alert: A number of Pennzoil products are on Rollback right now for a limited time at

Honestly, this is my new favorite way to shop! Come on, who doesn't want to shop from their couch?

I've shared a few of our dirty secrets. What are yours? Are you still driving the same car from high school? Do save money and change your own oil? What are you buying online?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Tips For Hiking with Dogs

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #PawsToSavor #CollectiveBias

Tahoe is an outdoor enthusiast's playground from skiing, mountain biking, hiking, SUP, etc. You name it, it's probably here. I'm lucky to call it home. With endless trails, my husband and I are not the only ones who like to get out and explore. Our seven year old German Shorthaired Pointer Roxy loves to hit the trails, too.

When you're hiking with a dog there are a few things you need to think about. You're not just packing  for yourself.

What to bring when hiking with dogs:
+ Pack plenty of food and water [plus, a little extra]
+ Bring a collapsable water bowl
+ Poop bag -- [Pick up your dog poop!]
+ A extra leash.
+ First aid kit

Before you leave the house:
+ Check you dogs paw pads before hitting the trial.
+ Be aware of the weather.
+ Know your dogs hiking ability and don't push it.
+ Make sure your dogs I.D. and shots are up to date.

Roxy keeps us active, but we keep her in tip top shape. This includes lots of walks/hikes, cuddles, fetch, and GOOD food. Within the last year we switched to Purina® Pro Plan® [read HERE & HERE]. Naturally, when we had the opportunity to partner with PetSmart and test Purina® Pro Plan® Savor® Shredded Blend we jumped at the chance. Note to self, triple check the bag before leaving the store so you don't end up buying your adult dog puppy food [34 lb bag MSRP: $47]. opps. Mom for the win! HA. Oh well, Roxy still loved the chicken and rice blend.

It was a real treat for Roxy girl as their dry formulas feature a combination of crunchy kibble and tender shredded pieces!

Why Purina® Pro Plan® Dog Food
+ High-quality ingredients including real meat, poultry, or fish.
+ 100% Complete & Balanced Nutrition for each life stage.
+ Optimal levels of protein and fat help dogs maintain an ideal body condition.
+ Carefully adjusted formulas mean your dog is getting exactly the nutrition he needs.

Purina® Pro Plan® is dedicated to helping owners discover their dog’s full potential through high-quality, great-tasting nutrition, and expert resources - giving dogs the chance to be - and feel - exceptional.

How do you keep your dog young and active?

10 Cookbooks You Want in Your Kitchen

"The only thing I like better than talking about Food is eating." -- John Walters

True story. As much as I love working out and green smoothies I LOVE food. I love everything about it -- from the of art of cooking to breaking bread with friends, food is my jam. This reminders me, it's time for a dinner party.

Over the years I've acquired a number of cookbooks however, only a few are in heavy rotation. On Sundays, I love pulling them out and searching the internet for delicious meals for the week. My weekly goal is to make at least one new dish.

With that said, here are 10 cookbooks I'm totally digging right now and think you will too!

1. The Joy of Cooking -- A kitchen staple. Every home cook should own a copy. I turn to The joy of Cooking mostly for basics -- pizza dough, pancakes, bread, etc.  The recipes are no fuss and prefect every time.

2. Well Fed -- For the Whole Food Paleo loving friends Well Fed is high on the list. Mel Joulwan breaks down the art of meal planning, prep and shopping. Her meals are simple and easy to follow. Try the Pad Thai.

3. Against All Grain -- I devoured this book. Danielle Walker's Paleo inspired twist on everyday food will leave you wanting more. From her slow cooker pulled pork to sandwich bread I can't get enough. Ok, let's visit the sandwich bread again. It's honestly the best 'paleo' bread I've every made/had. The secret ingredient is cashew butter! So much flavor.

4. Clean Green Drinks -- Green smoothie addict, right here! This is the only smoothie book you need to own. So many inspirational recipes. Fun Fact: Candice and I actually went to High School and College together!

5. The Quick Six Fix -- As much as I love cooking fun elaborate dishes there's something about simplicity. Well, Stuart O'Keefe nailed it. The Quick Six Fix is 100 no-fuss recipes using only six ingredients! Every guy and busy mom needs The Quick Six Fix. How could you not get on board with Crispy Salmon with Pistachio Basil Butter, Butternut Squash and Coconut Soup or Mustard Crusted Pork with Apple Cabbage Slaw. Is your mouth watering yet? I thought so.

6. Bonjour Y'all -- Remember the Blueberry + Raspberry Tart I made last summer? Yup, still cooking from this book. “Bonjour, Y’All,” the slogan for Heidi Vukov’s Croissants Bistro and Bakery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, perfectly encapsulates the popular restaurant’s elegant and delicious pairing of two distinct culinary traditions—European cuisine and Southern home cooking.

7. Clean Green Eats -- We all know we should eat more green foods, but after a few variations of the same salad, juice or smoothie, it’s easy to run out of ideas that excite our taste buds. Candice offers a variety of recipes made from whole foods packed full of nutrients that will make you rethink the way you eat.

8. 150 Best Spiralizer Recipes -- Zoodle anyone? With summer approaching zoodles are a great way to enjoy 'pasta' without the extra calories. Think light, but right. Plus, you're eating more veggies!

9. Paleo Perfected -- If you're into America's Test Kitchen and eating Paleo then you need this cookbook. It's foolproof, practical, and full of innovative recipes making it an invaluable resource.

10. The Complete Cooking For Two Cookbook  -- America's Test Kitchen strikes again. They reengineered 650 of their best recipes to serve just two! Yes, please. Smaller families shouldn't have to make meals meant for 4-6. While I do love leftovers sometimes it's easier to just cook for two.

I barely scratched the surface as the world is full of amazing cooks and cookbooks. What are a few of your favorite cookbooks? Don't tell the hubby, but I'm always in the market for more!

Birthday Wish List

Birthday Wish List

OMG... my 34th birthday is next week. It honestly just snuck up on me. The hubby recently asked me what I wanted and naturally I responded with something crazy like a new couch. I know it's a big ask and won't happen, so I started to really give it some thought. Since there's not much I need, I kept my list simple. Think items I would just love to have. Of course,  I would love anything from my Mother's Day list as well.

Without further adieu....

S'well Water Bottle -- just call me the water bottle hoarder :) One can never have too many.

Ray-Ban 'Classic Wayfarer' - I'm ready for a new pair and style. Polarized is the only way to go

Spiralizer - Zoodle anyone?

Watch - I love a good watch and never replaced my last one.

Loft Dress - I mean how cute is this dress? It's perfect from the office to happy hour.

Paleo Perfected: A Revolution in Eating Well with 150 Kitchen-Tested - While the hubby doesn't think I need another cookbook I think this would be the perfect addition!

Alo Sports Bra - I workout a lot and would welcome one to two new sports bras.

Running Skirt - It's summer which means it's time to ditch the leggings. As odd as it sounds I love hiking in running skirts .

Shoes - A girl can never have too many shoes. I've own a pair of Rainbows for 15 years and well it time to trade in my current pair. These VANS need to appear in my closet stat.

There you have it a short, simple and pretty practical birthday list.

Happy Birthday to me!

How to Stay Fit on Vacation

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #ElevateSalads #CollectiveBias

More often than not I'm asked how I'm able to stay fit and healthy especially after having a baby. Well folks good old diet and exercise. I know, I know easier said than done and what about vacation? It's never been easier to eat clean and feel great even when on vacation.

It's true. Last week I was in Hawaii and was able to maintain without all the comforts of my home kitchen and crossfit/spin family keeping me accountable. How was I able to stay healthy and fit? Here are my five tips to do just that, even in Hawaii!

1. INDUGE [but not too much]
Yes, I just gave you permission to have a scoop of homemade gelato, glass of wine or whatever your guilty pleasure is. Moderation is key even when on vacation. You don't want to create bad habits and know it's ok to turn down a second of glass, etc.

2. MOVE [Everyday]
I know the pool/beach is calling your name, but get moving before lounging in the sun. Go for a walk/run or get in a quick circuit.   Try four rounds of 25 air squats, 25 jumping lunges, 25 burpees, 25 push ups followed by a mile run/walk.

3. Keep Healthy Snacks/Meals Around
If you're staying in a condo try only eating out one meal a day. Make sure to stock the fridge with healthy options. If you're staying in a hotel ask for a mini fridge to keep a few items in. I personally love elevĀte salads because they are SO easy to grab and go.

elevĀte salads are portable nutrition at your fingertips no matter how busy life gets. Happiness and healthiness are right at your fingertips. Recently I packed our fridge with elevĀte salads [pictured: 4 Pack Organic Nutty Cranberry] from Costco because this mom didn't have time to meal prep after being in Hawaii for a week!

4. Drink Water!
Water does a body good. End of story. Make sure to pack a reusable water bottle.

5. Go for Adventure
In wine country? Go for a bike tour hoping from winery to winery. Go hiking, paddleboarding, zipping lining, snorkeling, etc. Bottom line get outside and get active.

All in all -- have fun, don't go crazy, but don't beat yourself up.

How do you stay active and fit on vacation?

Don't forget to pick up a pack of elevĀte salads the next time you're at Costco.

For real time updates follow elevĀte salads on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Good morning my food loving friends! I have a big favor to ask. I entered into a recipe contest and I need your help. Please vote HERE to help me win!

This fit junkie, like ice cream, has a weakness for Mexican food. Hail from San Diego I grew up with good options all around. Now in Tahoe that isn't the case so I've been honed my skill and can whip up a pretty good dish [IMO].

When Del Real reached out and asked if I was interested in using their products to create  something yummy I jumped at the chance! Plus, who would't want to win some $$$ and there recipe on the package. You can vote everyday for me HERE! Thanks.

With further adieu..... Chicken Stuffed Poblano Peppers!

Chicken Stuffed Poblano Peppers

Chicken Stuffed Poblano Peppers

4 medium poblano peppers
1 tbsp olive oil
2 medium tomatoes, diced
1/2 medium onion, diced
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp kosher salt
1 package Del Real Shredded Chicken [cooked per package directions]
1 1/2 cups Mexican Cheese blend
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with foil and brush it with a little olive oil.

Mini Banana Spilt Tarts #EffortlessPies

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #EffortlessPies #CollectiveBias

Do you every wonder how this fit junkie indulges? Well, honestly, it depends on the day. No seriously. Lately I’m been trying to be on point with my eating so my ‘treats’ have been a little better for me. Like last night I made faux banana splits. We’ll call them mini banana split tarts/pies for good measure. You see, while I was at my local Walmart, last week the fresh fruit and Reddi-wip® original  were calling my name. It didn’t help that they were on display next to each other! Needless to say they jumped in my cart, along with Keebler® Ready Crust® Mini Graham Cracker Pie Crust (6-count), Dannon® Light & Fit® Strawberry Cheesecake Greek Yogurt and a number of other items.

Fast forward to Saturday afternoon, my sweet tooth was screaming -- FEED ME. I obliged.

These 'pies' are effortless, great family snacks, simple and make for a  healthier dessert option, too.

Mini Banana Spilt Tarts [aka pies]
Makes 6

2 Dannon® Light & Fit® Strawberry Cheesecake Greek Yogurt
1 banana sliced
6 strawberries sliced
6 blackberries
1 pkg Keebler® Ready Crust® Mini Graham Cracker Pie Crust (6-count)
1 can Reddi-wip®
1 tbsp carob powder/cocoa powder for dusting

Add sliced banana to bottom of Keebler® Ready Crust® Mini Graham Cracker Pie Crust  [about 3-4 slices]. Top with yogurt and spread evenly. Layer with strawberries, Reddi-wip® and blackberries. If deserved garnish with a dusting of carob powder/cocoa powder.

Serve immediately. Enjoy!

The line's unique pea protein is the only available source that is 100 percent grown, harvested and processed in the USA, providing one of the smoothest, best tasting plant-based proteins on the market.

Loving Lately: All Things LOFT

Hi Friends -- Over the weekend I decided to do a little shopping. As in go the the store and try things on shopping! Actually, it was my first 'real' postpartum shopping trip aside from Target and workout gear! Working from home will do that to you, but with a new season I felt like my wardrobe needed a little refresh. Plus, mama needed a new bra.

I've never shopped at the LOFT before, but recently have often found myself browsing their site. However, I've never purchased anything. Well things have changed!

I found myself loving everything I tried out. They must have a magical mirror and lighting. ;) Anyway, here are a few of my favorite picks.

For more of my top picks, shop below!
