The Kitchen: Before & After

In 2015, only four months after Emerson was born, we decided to take on our biggest renovation to date! The kitchen and living room! It was a full remodel consisting of removing a 24ft wall, moving doors, extending walls, and everything else that goes with a kitchen remodel. It ended up taking longer than expected with back orders, etc. but in the end we couldn't be happier!

Let's just dive right in!

Here's what the kitchen looked like when we purchased the house in 2010! The house had a ton of potential.

Here's a few before snapshots. After moving in we painted the cabinets, walls, updated the hardware and added a ceiling fan. Sorry about the mess. We realized we needed to snap a few before photos after we started clearing everything out. Plus, baby fog...

We had two pretty decent spaces to work with, but they were both dark and ugly. The massive wall we decided to take down! Best decision ever.

The other side of the wall.

Removing the wall really lighten up the space. We moved the door from the mudroom to kitchen to allow for the refrigerator and pantry. While I love the idea of an all white kitchen we added warmth with light gray lower cabinets and a marble subway tile backsplash. Extending the backsplash to the ceiling gives the kitchen a nice visual and add texture. Not wanting any transitions in the flooring we used Hickory hardwood floors throughout the kitchen, living room, entry and hallway. Oh, the barn door! While it's currently unfinished I'm in love.

Since it was a load-bearing wall we had to include a post. Not ideal, but the wall is still gone.

The island is 7x4 feet and includes drawers/storage cabinets and a seating area. I love all the drawers!

The cabinet boxes are ikea and the doors are semi-handmade. The doors came unfinished at the time so we had them painted. Since installing our cabinets you can now purchase pre-painted doors from semi-handmade. Pro Tip: Have your cabinet maker/installer frame out the boxes instead of using the Ikea legs. While it might cost a tad more money upfront, in the long run they will be sturdier.

The countertops are a Carrera quartz and have very light veins. The lower cabinets are SW Rare Gray and uppers are white

We bought our house in 2010 and tackled the kitchen in 2015! Looking back at the before I don't know how I lived so long with the dated kitchen!

Stitch Fix #4

Hey, hey! My fourth Stitch Fix arrived Saturday. If you missed my unboxing, via FB Saturday, check out what I received below. It should be noted that I'm by no means a style blogger. I'm just your average gal who lives in workout clothes. With that said, I'm trying to add some style into my life and am sharing a few details along the way. Do you Stitch Fix?

Stitch Fix is an online styling service that delivers a personalized shopping experience, just for you. A personal stylist hand picks pieces to fit your tastes, needs and budget—and mails them directly to your door. Each box contains five items of clothing, shoes and/or accessories for you to try on at home. Keep what you love and send the rest back in a prepaid USPS envelope. Shipping and returns are free—even for exchanges! There's a $20 styling fee which is also applied to anything you keep!

Let's move onto my recent fix.

1. Daniel Rainn Kelvin Tie Neck Tassel Top - small - $68 - Returned
A fun boho top for summer however a tad too sheer and tight in the arms for me.

2. Laju Callen Cargo Vest - small - $88 - Returned
I really want a cargo vest, but this is not it. While the color is alright I would have preferred an army green color. Either way the fit was off -- too tight across my back.

3. Skies are Blue Zayada Mixed Material Sweater - small - $58 - Help I'm not sure!
The photo washes out the colors. It's actually cream with a dusty rose sheer-ish layer.  Although the fit is perfect and it's lightweight I'm on the fence.... which means it will likely be returned.

4. Unpublished Tessi Lace Back Top - small - $48 - returned
Do I even need to explain why I sent this back?! Just NO.

5. Pistola Dennis Jogger Pant - 27 - $88 - returned
I don't own a pair of joggers and LOVED these, but already own two pairs of pants the same color. For that reason I'm sadly sending these back. Not only did they fit perfectly they are so soft.

And that wraps up this fix. Overall, I mostly liked the items I received. I would love to hear what you like and don't like. Interested in Stitch Fix fill out your style profile HERE.

* Thank you Stitch Fix for waving the $20 styling fee. All opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting brands who help make this blog possible.

Random Thoughts for Friday

Happy Friday!

I don't know about you, but I don't know where the week went! Yesterday, during nap-time, I finally snapped some after pictures of our kitchen! Tune in next week for a full before and after post.

Last weekend was pretty mellow, but we did pick up a new kitchen runner from world market. Next on the list is a new living room rug and potentially a rug for under the kitchen table. Then there's always a couch and eventually I'll hang something on the walls. Our house looks like we just moved in...... you could say I'm a minimalist at heart.

Watching fixer upper makes me want to buy a house to gut and remodel -- while I'm not living in it. Oh, if I only had an unlimited budget. Maybe if blogged a little more I could make some extra spending cash ;)

Kid shoes... why are little girl shoes so darn cute! We actually just bought Emerson a pair of sneakers for school, but thesethese and these are on her list.

Emerson was crying yesterday because she wanted to go shopping (aka grocery store)....but girlfriend didn't want to put on pull-ups. We're pretty much potty trained (YAY), but still rock a pull-up during nap/bedtime or when we leave the house aside from preschool. Emerson is killing it. After she does her business she usually stands up and yells "I did it" then cheers/claps! So cute. Then she asks for a treat which is a Lara Bar bite, pretzels, or fig bar... Basically a special snack.

This weekend should be gorgeous and I'm looking forward to spending it outside.

Friday Link Love

Clutch (purchased from TJMaxx) / Sunglasses / Sunscreen

Hello, hello!

I'm starting to feel like a broken record, but life is straight up crazy busy. Today I have a 3 hour board meeting, followed by a client briefing, before hightailing it to Emerson's preschool for Mother's Day lunch and then popping over to the gym to get my workout in before open gym ends at 3 p.m. I'm exhausted just thinking about it. Throw in dropping off and picking up Emerson from school! Yup, I drop off and pick up....flexible schedule.

Anyway, I just wanted to pop in, say hey, and share a few things. See ya Monday, maybe !

+ I recently purchased these white jeans, this tee, these shoes and slip-ons! While they're a bit pricey I REALLY want a pair of Free People 'Mont Blanc' Asymmetrical Sandals.

+ #Betterbeauty....I'm slowly trying various Beauty Counter products and with summer right around the corner I'm digging their sunscreen. In other news, I LOVE this Arbonne mascara. It's natural and doesn't flake or rub!

+ I totally binge watched Girl Boss on Netflix the last few weeks and LOVED it. Now I need to read the book.

+ The Victoria Beckham for Target line is now on sale! There are still a ton of options online!

+ I started tracking my macros again because my eating has been out of control. Curious about what I eat in a day follow along via IG stories (@tiara_wasner).

+ Becoming a mom  for the first time comes with a mixed bag of emotions. My friend recently opened up about her experience with postpartum depression. It's raw, honest and beautifully written - Defense against the darkness.

Mini Style Summer Edition

Shopping for a little girl is so much fun! These days shopping generally goes a little like this. Oh, I could use a pair of white jeans, browse for said jeans for 5 minutes then click on toddler tab. Before I know it I've spent 30 minutes looking at toddler clothes and completely forgot about what I was really shopping for.

With that said here a few cute pieces I think Emerson needs in her closet this summer.

Your Weather Proof Grilling Solution! #GrillIt

As a Brand Ambassador for Hamilton Beach I received the Hamilton Beach Indoor Searing Grill to review, however, all opinions are 100% my own. This giveaway is sponsored by Hamilton Beach.

In 2017 Tahoe experienced one of the wettest and snowiest winters ever recorded! Not kidding. It even snowed over the weekend. Again, not kidding. Needless to say it made winter grilling non-exsistent until Hamilton Beach hooked yours truly up with a Hamilton Beach Indoor Searing Grill!

My hubby, the grill master, was skeptical at first. However not wanting to stand out in the rain or snow he started using the Indoor Searing Grill. Fast forward two months and it became a well used and loved kitchen gadget.

Here's the thing, with the Hamilton Beach Indoor Searing Grill you can grill all winter long without dealing with the elements. Even after all the snow melted we tried using our grill, but ran out of propane! Yeah, rookie mistake -- but the Indoor Searing Grill saved the day.

It's decent a size, without being too big, and easy to use and clean. The grill and cover are both dishwasher safe!

+ Outdoor grilled taste indoors with high searing temperature
+ Nonstick cooking plate removes for easy cleanup in the dishwasher
+ Removable hood & integrated drip tray are dishwasher safe
+  Adjustable temperature control ranges from 200° to high searing temperature of 450°
+ Lights indicate when the power is on and the grill has reached your selected temperature
+ 118 square inch nonstick grilling surface fits up to 8 servings

We've cooked everything from chicken and pork to vegetables! Up next, maybe salmon or shrimp kabobs! Over the craptastic weekend we 'grilled' pork tenderloin. The cuts actually look like steaks, but whatever. They were actually super easy to grill.

2 cloves Garlic, minced
1 tsp Lime, zest
1 Chipotle chile pepper, finely chopped (or 1/2 to 1 tsp chipotle powder)
1/4 c Honey
1/2 c Lime juice
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp Avocado oil

Mix lime zest, lime juice, honey, salt, and garlic in a small bowl. Pour mixture into a 1-gallon ziplock bag, add the chipotle pepper, and combine. Add pork tenderloin to the bag and seal. Try to remove as much air as possible. Marinate in the refrigerator for 6 to 24 hours, if you can remember rotate the bag halfway through. Grill pork as you typically would.

This + That

And just like that not only is it May, but it's Cinco de Mayo! While I could fill your feed with some delicious taco dish or margaritas I'm filling it with random thoughts, etc.

I can't believe I've been blogging for 10 years! Blogging as changed a lot since 2007. Thanks for sticking with me :)

Dream of retiring early? Then you'll want to read How This 28 Year Old Retired With $2.25 Million! Pretty amazing right?! If I can retire before 50 I would be a happy camper.

After reading JP's story I started devouring The Money Habit.

I've been spending hours on Zillow and Redfin looking for an investment property to flip, rent, Airbnb, etc. Which has me thinking about a new blog series.

Hulu original series... we don't have cable and haven't for 3 years! But that's for another day. Anyway we subscribe to Netflix and Hulu. I'm obsessed with Hulu's original series -- The Path, Harlots and A Handmaids Tale! Binge worthy.

We currently have a first generation Apple TV and it's on its way out. So you could say we're in the market for a new device. While we love our Apple TV we're considering a Roku 4 4400R 4K UHD Streaming Media Player (on sale $89!). Any thoughts?

I just scheduled another StitchFix... so now I wait and hope I'll like it.

Can we talk about FB live? Do you love it? Hate it? I shared what I recently bought for Emerson via FB live. While it was awkward (hello first timer) it was super easy to hop on and share a few items. Let me know if you want more :)

I'm currently digging/loving this Minted print, these Old Navy rockstar jeans and this Nike sports bra.
