9 Things You Should Snag From Target

Calling all Target Shoppers... I rounded up 9 things you might want to snag from Target right now. Let's face it because Target is awesome and they are still slaying it!

So let's break it down a little further. Instant Pot seemed to be the IT kitchen gadget of 2017. Did you by one? Guess what I didn't either, but I still want one and this cookbook to go with it. I also can't make up my mind about an Airfryer. Do you have one? Are they worth it?

#TargetStyle! Come on, everything is so cute right now. I purchased the Free People knockoffs when they first came out and LOVE them. I wear them all the time and receive so many compliments. Universal Threads also has a number of basic tops to help transition to spring. Oh and the dresses! This one is in my cart!

You can't leave target without browsing all things home decor. After 8 years we still don't have patio furniture etc. Well, things are changing this summer! I think some outdoor lights would be a nice touch.

I'm still on the hunt for the perfect area rug and while the above rug might not work in my house I think someone should totally pick it up.

In the Open: Thoughts on 18.4

Four weeks down one to go... I can't hardly believe the open is over after Friday! I've loved the process this year even if the workouts are totally random. Sometimes I wonder what HQ is thinking. I mean scaled this week had bear crawls?! That's not a workout that's a warmup drill! Anyway, embrace the process right?

Without further adieu...

THE WORKOUT

For time:

21-15-9
deadlifts, 155 lb. + handstand push-ups

then...

21 deadlifts, 205 lb.
50-ft. handstand walk
15 deadlifts, 205 lb.
50-ft. handstand walk
9 deadlifts, 205 lb.
50-ft. handstand walk

Time cap: 9 min.

INITIAL THOUGHTS
Yup, my neck and back are going to HATE me. Deadlifts are not my jam and I've said it before -- no one should ever do heavy deadlifts for time. With that said, the new HSPU standard didn't really phase me. You just do what you can do.

MY PERFORMANCE
Last year the 55 rep DL workout KILLED my back. Although overall I'm in much better shape this year, I was very conservative in this workout. While I could have gone with big sets on the deadlifts I did all singles. Yup, that's right, ALL singles. Then busted out big sets on the HSPUs. But guess what? My back didn't lock up on me and I feel great. I finished with 79 reps... not my best performance. Oh, and the new HSPU standard didn't bother me at all. I made sure my HSPUs were slow and controlled so I made each rep.

FINAL THOUGHTS
While I know I could have pushed harder and logged more reps I'm not advancing this year so why kill my back and be out for weeks?! Yes, I want to push, but I'm also in this fitness thing for the long haul. However, even with an extremely low score, I'm still sitting top 10% worldwide in my age group. This is HUGE. Last year I finished top 25%!

Friday Favorites


Hello, hello! It's snowing again in Tahoe! What the what! Where is spring... It's all good I'll take the snow as long as April is sunny. I'm sitting here in my office visualizing 18.4, watching the snow fall and procrastinating working. It happens.

If you guys haven't made these protein oatmeal bars you need to stat! Emerson requests these weekly... not kidding. They are full of fiber, protein, and greens. I use Amazing Grass Organic Plant Based Vegan Protein Superfood Powder so Emerson can enjoy them.

FAVORITE APPAREL 
I've been rocking this 'Love Yo Self' tank for the open workouts and well I love it! It's cute and a reminder to not be too hard on yourself. It also will be fun for summer with a pair of jean shorts.

I love Free People, but sometimes their prices are ridiculous. Either way, this sweater is super cute and I'll snag it once it's on sale.

I'm on the hunt for a chunky heel summer sandal and I need these Lucky Brand Xaylah Ankle Strap Sandal.

All things Athleta! Seriously though if you're not rocking Athleta workout apparel you're missing out. Durable, soft and stylish I couldn't ask for anything more.

In the open: Thoughts on 18.3


Hey, how did that happen again? Yup, 18.4 will be announced in a matter of hours and I'm just now getting around to recapping 18.3. Well, that's life. For those of you who enjoy/like CrossFit keep reading, otherwise, check back tomorrow for Friday Favorites.

THE WORKOUT

2 rounds for time of:
100 double-unders
20 overhead squats
100 double-unders
12 ring muscle-ups
100 double-unders
20 dumbbell snatches
100 double-unders
12 bar muscle-ups

Men perform 115-lb. OHS, 50-lb. DB snatches

Time cap: 14 minutes

INITIAL THOUGHTS
When Dave was announcing all the movements I was jumping for joy. Then he said 100 double-unders and I thought --  well, SHIT. I mean I can do double-unders, but I'm not a double-under queen. But that's what the open is all about. I also thought -- well, I'm going to pee my pants and that's going to suck. #fitmomlife

MY PERFORMANCE
I was giddy walking into the gym Friday afternoon because of muscles-ups! They are my jam. With that said, I warmed up and got to work. I followed my game plan and broke things up from the start. Well, the ring muscle-ups were not clicking which was frustrating because they are my jam! Needless to say, I didn't do that well and redid it on Monday and slayed the WOD. As in knocked out 101 more reps than Friday. My final score was 348...

FINAL THOUGHTS
Things really clicked on Monday and afterward, I felt as though I could have pushed harder. But then you never know. Did things click because it was the right pace? If I pushed harder would I have done as well? Either way Monday was WAY better and I finished 1,077 out of 30,918 worldwide! Yeah, you could say I'm pretty damn proud of that.

Do you think tonight will be a repeat? I'm secretly hoping for 16.1. I guess we'll find out in a few hours.

How to Eat Healthy on a Budget

Disclaimer: I'm not a dietitian, nutritionist, coupon queen, financial advisor, etc. I'm just a mom, wife, friend, and fitness enthusiasts trying to live a healthy life without breaking the bank. Who's with me!?


This is the ultimate goal, right? Eat all the healthy foods without spending your whole paycheck? Well, my goal for 2018 was to cut our food budget in half. I hate to admit it, but we were spending roughly $1,000 a month and there's only three of us! In January I was on a mission to save some money and while I didn't stay under the set budget of $500 I learned a lot along the way. February was better and although again I didn't stay under $500 for the month I saved roughly $300. I feel good about February because I was able to stock up on meat and other freezer items. With that said, March is going to be our month to stay under the $500 budget without sacrificing a healthy diet.

How are we eat healthy meals on a budget? 

Make upfront investments 
Yeah, I know. This doesn't' make sense, but trust me there are a few items you'll need/want in order to save long term. First, buy a freezer. We purchased a practically brand new Kenmore freezer off FB marketplace for half the price! But if you can't wait to find a used one this GE freezer from Lowe's is very similar and only $200. Next, you'll want a FoodSaver (similar). I feel like I'm an 80-year-old saying that, but this will keep everything fresh longer. 

Slowly start stocking up
No need to run and out an fill your freezer or pantry with your favorite items, but when you see things you use on sale buy two. One for now and one for later. That way when you run out you don't have to pay full price. When you see meat on super sale buy it and freeze it for later. Over time you'll have a decent stockpile to pull from. Again, it's an upfront cost that will save you money in the long run.

Make a list & Watch for sales
Making a list always helps keep spending down. It saves you from walking up and down the aisles buying things you probably could live without. When I'm making our weekly shopping list I like to plan around what's on sale. The easiest way to eat healthily and save is to purchase produce that's in season and on sale. This might mean going to various stores.


Visit your local Discount Store
It wasn't until recently I started shopping at our local discount store, but boy does it make a difference. Ours is awesome and carries quality products and organic produce super discounted! Products include, but are not limited to, Late July Chips, Hope Hummus, Amazing Grass, So delicious, Vital Farm Eggs, etc.! 

Use all the APPS
When in doubt there's an app for it and in this case a few that will save you money. Not only do I use loyalty reward programs, but I use the store apps when shopping at stores such as Raley's, Target, Whole Foods, etc.

So here's the thing -- by making these small shopping habits over time you'll start to see the savings really add up.

You can also cut coupons, but I usually don't find coupons for items I want. I just keep an eye on the sale ads and stock up when things are cheap.

BTW, I should note why I'm trying to cut our bill. Straight up principle. People say it's too expensive to eat healthily and I'm up for the challenge to provide them wrong. I love a good challenge and it's not like I'm busy or anything. HA

A Fit Life is about Consistency Over Perfection

Here's the thing, I'm often asked how do you do it? How do you eat so healthy? How do you find time to workout? How do you get a toddler to eat? How do you (fill in the blank)?

I wanted her to hold the box, but this is what she gave me instead. #thatmomlife

Here's the answer... there's no right way or wrong way, there's only consistency. That's right, it's about being consistent, not perfect. Perfect is boring while consistency is sustainable.

So let's focus on food because you all know I LOVE to eat and talk about food. As you know I recently lost 15+ pounds and it's because I found a happy balance in my diet. Not because it was perfectly filled with fruits and veggies, but because it was balanced with proteins, fats, and carbs... aka, all the things I love! Yes, I said fats and carbs! Please don't think cutting certain foods out of your daily diet is a must.

So a daily staple in our household is cereal. Gasp, I know. I just said cereal. But here's the thing it's awesome and there are so many ways you can enjoy it without going overboard -- aka, eating more than the suggested serving size.

Five Ways We Enjoy Cereal/Granola

1. With plain greek yogurt and fruit

2. The Old Fashion Way -- 2/3 cup in a bowl with a splash of milk preferably almond milk.

3. On top of a Smoothie

4. On top of protein ice cream

5. As a Waffle/Pancake topping

But back to consistency. While it may sound tedious I plan out my meals the night before via MyFitnessPal. This is how I'm consistent. I start with snacks because honestly, snacks are my jam! Every day I have nonfat plain greek yogurt with granola and fruit. It really never gets old. Lately, I've been loving Cascadian Farm Oat and Honey Granola. It's so good.

I recently discovered it while browsing the granola/cereal aisle at Walmart. Yup, Walmart. Hello, they have the best prices. Aside from a box of Cascadian Farm Oat and Honey Granola I picked up a box of Annie's Organic Cinnabunnies Cereal for Emerson. On the mornings we're running behind cereal is our go-to. Plus, Annie's Organic Cinnabunnies Cereal makes a tasty waffle topping... just saying.

Sometimes we like to eat them in a bag while watching cartoons in the morning.

There are a lot of cereals out there and not all are created equal. Although, I say eat cereal you also want to look at the ingredients. For example, Cascadian Farm Oat and Honey Granola only has eight ingredients! Yes, only eight! Amazing right?! What's even better -- I can pronounce all of them. That's a product and brand I can feel good buying for my family.

OK, let's get back on track. The moral of my food story is find your balance and be consistent. Enjoying the foods I love like Cascadian Farm Oat and Honey Granola keep me on track.

In the open: Thoughts on 18.2

That face though...

Well, folks week 2 of the CrossFit open didn't disappoint. It was a lung burner with a max lift. Oh, Joy - said no one ever. But seriously I wasn't too excited about the workout because of the 1 rep max clean. I'm just not there, yet. But that's what the open is about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

So let's get to the nitty gritty...

THE WORKOUT

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 reps for time of:
Dumbbell squats  25-lb. dumbbells
Bar-facing burpees

Workout 18.2a 1-rep-max clean

Time cap: 12 minutes to complete 18.2 AND 18.2a


INITIAL THOUGHTS
Honestly, I didn't think this WOD was very exciting. Probably because it's not in my wheelhouse. When there's a movement you're super good at you are more likely to be excited about it.

PERFORMANCE
UGH -- this is one of those workouts I thought I was going fast, but that was not the case. Also, I don't recommend pushing that hard when you're super congested and can't breathe. With that said, I redid it and well I only did it 12 seconds faster! You could say I was a bit disappointed. My final time/score: 8:16 /135 lbs.

Although I'm disappointed I have to reflect and remind myself how far I've come. I don't know if I would have finished in the 12-minute time cap this time last year... So there's that.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Whew, while I'm glad I redid it I'm also glad that it's over. Ready to move on.

Friday Favorites

Sports Bra / Leggings
Do you ever have days, weeks, or even months where you know you did a bunch of stuff, but then have no idea what you actually did? Yeah, that's currently my status. Please send help. I'm ready for life to pause, slow down, or an awesome assistant because that would be really helpful. I don't know how I manage to do half of the things I do. This is bigger than "mom life." With that said, bear with me, while I navigate balancing work, home life, fitness/health, friendships, etc. In the meantime, let's talk about things I'm currently loving and wanting.

Alright, ladies, the next time you head to Target (or shop online) here are a few things you might want to pick up!  These free people knockoffs, this striped top, and this clutch!

BEST MEAL OF THE WEEK
Well, most of my meals were pretty basic this week. However, if I had to pick one it would have to be Cilantro Lime Cauliflower rice with baked salmon with the runner-up the chicken burrito bowl. Honestly, I've made the Chicken Burrito Bowl 3 times in the last week. It's that good, filling and healthy! Want to build your own? Here's what I use: shredded chicken, jasmine rice, cilantro lime black beans, salsa, spinach, cheese, and avocado. Enjoy!

FAVORITE WORKOUT APPAREL 
Currently, I'm all about Nike and Athleta right now. Seriously the best. I know you're probably thinking, but what about Lululemon... I love their sports bras and shorts, but their pants and tanks are not worth the price (IMHO) -- sorry. Right now I'm loving these 7/8 leggings, this sports bra and this tank.
